Empress Leizu (3yr Bay Filly)
Empress Leizu, who is named after a legendary Chinese Empress from the 27th century BC who was said to have discovered silk, has a much better pedigree than you would expect given her relatively modest purchase price.
This, together with her size and scope, is probably the reason renowned and highly successful bloodstock agent Charlie Gordon-Watson could not resist buying her for just 12,500gns as a yearling.
Empress Leizu is a daughter of King’s Stand Stakes winner Chineur out of the unraced Silk Point, a daughter of Barathea out of top-class Lupe Stakes winner Scimitarra. Silk Point is herself a half-sister to Deserve, winner of two of his four starts for Henry Cecil, and 1m 2f winner Delphinus, the dam of top-class Hong Kong performer Saturn and Group 3 winning sprinter Captain Gerrard. The dam’s family traces back to top-class sprinter Double Form.
Empress Leizu’s dam has a 100 per cent record with her three foals to date. The first, All Of Me, won twice for Terry Mills and the second, Porta Westfalica, won over a mile in Germany. Her third foal was Empress Leizu.
Empress Leizu ran unplaced three times for Ed Dunlop before being dropped to claiming company for a Class 6 contest at Wolverhampton in December.
Setting off in front from the outset, she maintained a steady pace until quickening discernibly on the home turn. Keeping on strongly, she overcame obvious signs of inexperience to beat the 76-rated Flipping by one and three-quarter lengths, with the 75-rated Inside Track a further three-quarters of a length away in third.
Rated 50 at the time, and receiving 11lb from the second and 8lb from the third, Empress Leizu ran to a mark somewhere in the mid to high 60s. This would suggest that her new mark of 60 leaves her with a few pounds still in hand.
The form has received a further boost with the subsequent exploits of third-home Inside Track, who has since won (and finished second and third) in her three subsequent starts. The fourth Hubble Space and sixth Clayton Flick have also run well subsequently, finishing third and second respectively.I am sorry to say that there are no more shares available in Empress Leizu. We sold the last one on Monday 24 May.

Mastership (6yr Chestnut Gelding)
Mastership, the winner of almost £50,000 in win and place money, has served his owners well since being acquired from Clive Brittain’s yard the autumn of 2007. Although far from straightforward, everyone agrees the horse has the ability to win a big race, as he proved when landing the prestigious Beeswing Stakes in July and running an unlucky fourth in the 2008 Bunbury Cup.
Mastership, who is trained in Yorkshire by John Quinn, remains in training for another campaign in 2010.Mastership is fully syndicated and owned by Dark Horse Racing Partnership Four and was previously owned by Dark Horse Racing Partnership Two.
